Nakoma Project

While practitioners of the International Style, such as Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, elevated the exposure of structure and “weightlessness,” Meyer strove to balance the conflicting tendencies of maintaining spaciousness while providing substance.

Indigenous Sensibilities With A Modern Context

Local schemes and requirements played a large role in Meyer’s residential portfolio. As modernism came to terms with Texas through Meyer’s architectural aesthetic, the Nakoma Residence displays adherence to simplicity while maintaining warmth and connectivity through the use of natural woods, water, and unadorned brick.

The structural simplicity of the staircase reveals the influence of the Bauhaus and International Style movements with its purity in form and dedication to material.

The Humanism Element

Whether designing interior spaces, lighting, or furniture, Meyer’s creations incorporate the quintessential human element. From providing earthy, organic-hued spaces with a warm ambience to the free-flowing arrangement and ease within his spatial programming, human touches remain prevalent throughout the Nakoma Residence.

The design of the doorknobs exemplifies this attention to detail and provides the personal element. Formed out of stainless steel in an egg shape, they were custom-made to fit in the palm of your hand.

“God is in the Details” Aesthetic

Systematic details dominated the aesthetic of modernist architects and German industrials of the Werkbund style. Meyer’s built-in birch desk and wardrobe furniture display the influence of the repetitive nature through the datum and style of the draw pulls. Additionally, the unadorned, simple treatment of the birch wood further conveys to Modernist aesthetic.

Vanishing Boundaries

Reflecting the Modern design aesthetic values of Le Corbusier, the use of corner windows became a trademark in Meyer’s residential designs. With a limited use of steel mullions, the ribbon windows indicative of Le Corbusian aesthetic becomes a focal element in the Nakoma Residence.
